What are datasets?

Datasets contain a relevant section of the available data and form the basis for diagrams. An overview of the available datasets can be viewed under the Datasets tab.

The table view shows all datasets as well as metadata or information about the dataset, such as the type, the database from which the dataset originates and the last modification date. The table can also be filtered and searched according to various criteria. For example, only datasets of a certain type or a certain schema can be displayed.

Clicking on the name of the dataset takes you directly to the diagram view. The corresponding dataset is then already preselected as the data source. If you start creating a new diagram from the diagram view, the list of existing datasets appears as a drop-down selection in the first step.

How do I create a new dataset?

There are two ways to create a new dataset:

1. In the dataset view, clicking on the blue button leads to a graphical interface that guides you through the creation process.

In this view, you can select a database, a schema and a table. A preview of the columns and data types contained is also displayed.

Click on the Create dataset and Create diagram button to save the dataset under the name of the table and go directly to the diagram view.

2. Datasets can also be created via the SQL Studio view. This allows greater flexibility due to the possibility of transforming the dataset as required in the query. Further information on SQL Studio can be found in the chapter "What is SQL Studio?"

The result of the SQL query can be saved as a dataset using the Save button. This also gives you the option of selecting a name for the dataset.
